An allegation has been raised against a local police officer for obstructing the sale of beef and threatening a butcher in the Jalirpar area of Muksudpur upazila in Gopalganj. Seeking a remedy for this incident, a meat trader named Alamgir Kasai has submitted a written application to the Deputy Commissioner (DC). Later, when the application spread on social media, it created discussion and criticism. However, the police administration and the accused officer have denied the allegation, claiming the incident to be a ‘misunderstanding’ and ‘exaggerated’.
In the viral application, Alamgir Kasai mentioned that he is a resident of the Jalirpar area of Muksudpur upazila. For a long time, he has been renting a room next to the South Jalirpar Bus Stand Jame Mosque and selling beef according to the demands of local worshipers and residents. He alleges that on the afternoon of May 15, Khandaker Aurangzeb, the in-charge of the Sindiaghat police outpost, went there and told him to stop selling beef. He claims that he was also intimidated and threatened at that time.
The application further states that since this incident, anxiety and anger have arisen among the local Muslim community. Alamgir Kasai claims that the Muslims of Jalirpar Union are being harassed in various ways. He seeks the administration's cooperation to continue selling beef next to the mosque as before.
Regarding this matter, Alamgir Kasai said that his beef sales have been stopped since last Friday. The in-charge of the local police outpost came and forbade him from selling beef there. According to him, he was informed that beef sales would not continue here because it was the instruction of the local Member of Parliament. He also alleges that he was threatened that if he slaughtered a cow again, strict legal action would be taken against him and he would be dragged to court.
Alamgir further said that the shop where he does business is rented from the mosque committee. He sells meat in the shop in front of the mosque after cleaning the blood and dirt according to religious rules on the river bank behind the mosque. He claims that he did not slaughter a cow in the place or boundary of any Hindu community.
Alamgir also said that he has submitted a written application to the Deputy Commissioner seeking a remedy for this incident. He said he has been assured by the DC office. In his words, if the police had not obstructed him legally, he would not have had the courage to file an application against an outpost in-charge. However, since a man of the law obstructed his livelihood, he approached the DC. He also mentioned that the local Member of Parliament later spoke to him and assured him of resolving the matter.
However, Sindiaghat police outpost in-charge Khandaker Aurangzeb denied the allegation. He said he did not say any such thing to Alamgir. He went there under the guidance of Member of Parliament Selimuzzaman Sir. He claims that the MP wanted to know who was selling beef in the Jalirpar area, as it had not been sold there for a long time. He went there mainly to inquire about that and to say that in the future, coordination should be made with him before selling meat. He also stated that no threats or offensive words were spoken beyond that.
Regarding the incident, Muksudpur Circle ASP Nafisur Rahman said that the actual incident is not as the complainant claims. According to him, the Jalirpar area is mainly inhabited by people of the Sanatan religion, and there has been no tradition of slaughtering cows publicly there for a long time. As the matter started anew recently, objections were raised by the local Sanatan religious community and the administration was informed through various means.
The ASP further said that considering that communal harmony should not be destroyed in any way, the outpost in-charge was instructed to look into the matter.
